To play the South African lotto, choose your game, fill in one or more boards with your numbers and buy them before sales close at 20h40 on draw night. The National Lottery has three main draw games. LOTTO is 6 numbers from 1–52, drawn on Wednesdays and Saturdays. PowerBall is 5 numbers from 1–50 plus a PowerBall from 1–16, drawn on Tuesdays and Fridays. Daily LOTTO is 5 numbers from 1–36, drawn every evening except Christmas Day. Results are published from 21h00.
Since June 2026 the National Lottery has been run by Sizekhaya Holdings, which took over from iThuba Holdings. The changeover came with new rules: smaller number pools for LOTTO and PowerBall, a R10 PowerBall board, a renamed PowerBall add-on and one add-on dropped.
A note on sources. The official site, nationallottery.co.za, confirms the operator, the 20h40 sales close and results from 21h00. Its game-rule pages would not load when we checked on 11 October 2026. The number pools, prices and odds in this guide therefore come from Wikipedia, cross-checked with Lottoland ZA, a third-party seller. They are reported figures, not ones we could confirm on an official page. The LOTTO and Daily LOTTO prices in particular may predate the new operator's price list, so confirm them with your retailer before you play.

What you need before you play
- Age: you must be 18 or older.
- A sales channel: a National Lottery retailer, or a digital channel that sells National Lottery games. The list of channels may have changed with the new operator, so check the official site.
- Money for your boards: R10 per PowerBall board, plus R5 for PowerBall XTRA. Reported prices are R5 per LOTTO board and R3 per Daily LOTTO board.
- Time: sales close at 20h40 on draw nights.
Boards, draws and add-ons explained
Three words cause most of the confusion in "South African lotto boards and draws explained" searches:
- Board: one set of numbers, the same thing other countries call a line or a panel. One LOTTO board is your 6 numbers. You can play several boards on one ticket, and each board costs the board price.
- Draw: one draw night. If your channel lets you enter more than one draw, each extra draw multiplies the cost of your boards.
- Add-on: an optional extra game played with the same board, such as PowerBall XTRA or LOTTO PLUS 1. It costs extra per board and runs under its own rules. An add-on never changes your odds in the main game.
Example: 3 PowerBall boards for one draw cost 3 × R10 = R30. Adding PowerBall XTRA to all three costs another 3 × R5 = R15, so R45 in total. The same three boards entered for both Tuesday and Friday cost R90.
How to play, step by step
- Pick a game: LOTTO, PowerBall or Daily LOTTO.
- Fill in your boards. LOTTO: 6 numbers from 1 to 52. PowerBall: 5 numbers from 1 to 50 and one PowerBall from 1 to 16. Daily LOTTO: 5 numbers from 1 to 36. You can also ask for random numbers, which have exactly the same odds.
- Choose any add-ons you want: PowerBall XTRA for PowerBall, or LOTTO PLUS 1 for LOTTO.
- Choose the draw date(s) and pay before 20h40.
- Keep your ticket safe. It is your proof of entry when you claim.
- Check the results from 21h00 on draw night (see the last section).
What changed in 2026
When Sizekhaya took over in June 2026, three changes affected players directly, as reported by Wikipedia and Lottoland ZA:
- PowerBall: the PowerBall pool shrank from 1–20 to 1–16, the board price went from R5 to R10, and PowerBall PLUS became PowerBall XTRA.
- LOTTO: the main pool shrank from 1–58 to 1–52.
- Daily LOTTO: the Daily LOTTO PLUS add-on was discontinued.
Smaller pools mean fewer possible combinations, so each board's jackpot odds improved. Here is the arithmetic, calculated from each game's number grid:
| Game | Before | After | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| PowerBall | C(50,5) × 20 = 2,118,760 × 20 = 42,375,200 | C(50,5) × 16 = 2,118,760 × 16 = 33,900,160 | 20% fewer combinations |
| LOTTO | C(58,6) = 40,475,358 | C(52,6) = 20,358,520 | about half as many (÷ 1.99) |
Better odds per board, but not per rand on PowerBall
PowerBall's price doubled while the odds per board improved by 20%. Comparing what each rand buys shows the trade-off:
- Before: R10 bought two boards at R5, so 2 chances in 42,375,200, or 1 in 21,187,600 per R10.
- After: R10 buys one board, so 1 in 33,900,160 per R10.
Per rand spent, your chance at the PowerBall jackpot is now lower than before, even though each board is more likely to win. LOTTO went the other way. With the pool cut to 52, each board has about twice its old jackpot chance. If the reported R5 board price is still right, R10 of LOTTO buys 2 chances in 20,358,520, or 1 in 10,179,260.
What it would cost to cover every combination
One more way to compare the games: multiply the number of combinations by the board price. This is our own illustration, not a strategy. Nobody can buy every combination.
| Game | Combinations | Board price | Cost of every combination |
|---|---|---|---|
| PowerBall | 33,900,160 | R10 | R339,001,600 |
| LOTTO | 20,358,520 | R5* | R101,792,600 |
| Daily LOTTO | 376,992 | R3* | R1,130,976 |
*Reported price, not confirmed on an official page.
PowerBall: how it works
On each PowerBall board you choose 5 numbers from 1 to 50 and 1 PowerBall from 1 to 16. The jackpot needs all five plus the PowerBall: 1 in 33,900,160 per board, from C(50,5) × 16. The jackpot rolls over to the next draw if nobody wins it, and prizes are paid across 9 tiers. The current jackpot is ZAR 112,000,000.
PowerBall XTRA replaced PowerBall PLUS. It costs R5 extra per board. We could not read the XTRA prize rules on an official page, so check them with your retailer before you add it.
"When does PowerBall play?" depends on which PowerBall you mean. South Africa's PowerBall is drawn on Tuesdays and Fridays. The US Powerball is a different game with different numbers (5 of 1–69 + 1 of 1–26), drawn on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Our US Powerball guide explains that one. The latest South African draw is on the PowerBall results page. The last draw was Oct 9, 2026: 3, 14, 17, 19, 37, 16, where the last number is the PowerBall.
LOTTO: how it works
SA LOTTO asks you to choose 6 numbers from 1 to 52 per board. A Bonus Ball is drawn as well, but it is not part of the jackpot: the 1 in 20,358,520 jackpot odds count only the six main numbers, C(52,6). You need at least 3 numbers for the smallest prize, and LOTTO pays prizes across 8 tiers.
LOTTO PLUS 1 and "Lotto Max" are listed as add-on draws on the official homepage. We could not confirm their prices or prize rules on an official page, so ask your retailer before you add them.
The South African National Lottery started in March 2000, according to Wikipedia. The next LOTTO draw is Oct 14, 2026, and recent draws are on the SA Lotto results page.
Daily LOTTO: how it works
Daily LOTTO is the small, frequent game: 5 numbers from 1 to 36, drawn every evening except Christmas Day. That answers "is Daily Lotto every day?" and "does Daily Lotto play on Saturday or Sunday?": yes, both, including weekends and public holidays other than Christmas Day.
To win the top prize you must match all five numbers, at 1 in 376,992 per board, C(36,5). That is far easier than LOTTO or PowerBall. Prizes are paid across 5 tiers. The Daily LOTTO PLUS add-on was discontinued after the 2026 operator change, so "how to play Daily Lotto Plus" no longer applies.
The Daily LOTTO results are updated after every draw. The last draw was Oct 11, 2026: 10, 12, 22, 29, 34.
Which SA lotto game has the best odds?
Daily LOTTO, by a wide margin. Its top prize is 1 in 376,992 per board, against 1 in 20,358,520 for LOTTO and 1 in 33,900,160 for PowerBall. Daily LOTTO is about 54 times easier to win than LOTTO and about 90 times easier than PowerBall. Choose by what matters to you: a top prize that is far easier to hit (Daily LOTTO), or a larger, harder jackpot (LOTTO, PowerBall). Compare the current jackpots on each game's page before you decide.
Common mistakes
- Mixing up the PowerBall games. US and Australian Powerball results are different draws. Check that a results page is South African before comparing numbers.
- Using old odds. Odds quoted before June 2026 (1–58 LOTTO, 1–20 PowerBall) are out of date.
- Expecting an add-on to help in the main game. XTRA and PLUS 1 are separate extras. They don't change your main-game odds.
- Missing the 20h40 cut-off. Sales close before the draw.
- Chasing "due" numbers. Every number has the same chance in every draw.
How to check your results
- Wait for results from 21h00 on draw night.
- Open the results page for your game: PowerBall, LOTTO or Daily LOTTO.
- Compare each board with the winning numbers. For LOTTO, check the Bonus Ball separately. For PowerBall, check the PowerBall separately.
- Look up your match in the prize breakdown, when our data partner supplies one.
- Claim through the official National Lottery channels. LottaGo shows results only.
What LottaGo's draw data shows
Because the number pools changed in 2026, LottaGo counts statistics only for draws under the current rules. Older draws used different pools and cannot be compared directly, so the histories are still short:
- LOTTO: 38 draws since Jun 3, 2026. Most drawn so far: 24, 10, 19, 23, 8, and 20.
- PowerBall: 38 draws since Jun 2, 2026. Most drawn so far: 40, 2, 27, 37, 9, and 19.
- Daily LOTTO: 1,770 draws since Dec 1, 2021. Most drawn so far: 10, 14, 4, 25, 28, and 11.
With this few draws, "most drawn" lists move around a lot from week to week. That is random noise, not a trend. Daily LOTTO builds up history fastest because it draws every day, so the most common Daily Lotto numbers will settle first.
LottaGo's AI Agent builds five lines per game from these draws, using hot numbers, overdue numbers, all-time leaders, typical shape and frequent pairs. A walk-forward backtest against random picks shows the strategies perform like random picks. Use the lines for fun, not as a forecast.
Buying South African lottery tickets through LottaGo
All three games are marked as on sale on LottaGo. The "Buy ticket" button leads to LottaGo's official partner, which buys a real ticket and pays any prize. LottaGo does not sell tickets or pay prizes itself. It earns a commission on these sales, and the commission never affects statistics or AI Agent lines.
