To play Powerball, you pick 5 white balls from 1 to 69 and 1 red Powerball from 1 to 26. Each play costs $2. Matching all six wins the jackpot, and the odds of that are 1 in 292,201,338. Draws are held every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday at 10:59 pm Eastern Time. Adding Power Play for $1 more multiplies any non-jackpot prize.
This guide covers the US game. On LottaGo it is listed as PowerJack (Powerball), which follows the results of the official US Powerball draw. If you are in Australia or South Africa and searched for "Powerball", you may be looking for a different game. The next section sorts that out.
Which Powerball do you mean?
Three different lotteries use the Powerball name, and their rules are not the same:
| Game | Main numbers | Powerball | Draw days | Jackpot odds |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Powerball (US) | 5 of 1–69 | 1 of 1–26 | Mon, Wed, Sat | 1 in 292,201,338 |
| Powerball Australia | 7 of 1–35 | 1 of 1–20 | Thursday | 1 in 134,490,400* |
| PowerBall (South Africa) | 5 of 1–50 | 1 of 1–16 | Tue, Fri | 1 in 33,900,160 |
*Calculated by LottaGo from the number grid: C(35,7) × 20 = 6,724,520 × 20 = 134,490,400.
For the Australian game, see Powerball Australia results and statistics. For the South African game, our guide to SA PowerBall, LOTTO and Daily LOTTO covers the 2026 rule changes. Everything below is about the US game.
Powerball rules at a glance
- Format: 5 white balls from 1–69, plus 1 red Powerball from 1–26
- Price: $2 per play, plus $1 for Power Play (checked October 2026)

- Jackpot odds: 1 in 292,201,338
- Odds of any prize: 1 in 24.87

Powerball is coordinated by the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL) and was launched in 1992, both according to Wikipedia.
What you need
- To be old enough. Minimum ages are set by each jurisdiction that sells Powerball. LottaGo itself is 18+.
- A ticket from an authorised seller. In the US that means a licensed retailer or an official state lottery channel. On LottaGo, the PowerJack page is marked on sale. Its "Buy ticket" button leads to LottaGo's official partner, which buys the real ticket for you where its service is available; the partner does not serve players in the US itself or in several other countries. LottaGo earns a commission on those purchases. It does not sell tickets or pay prizes itself.
- A spending limit. With three draws a week, $2 a line adds up fast. One line per draw is $6 a week, or $9 with Power Play.
How to play Powerball, step by step
Step 1: Pick your five white balls
Choose five different numbers from 1 to 69. The order does not matter: 3, 17, 25, 48, 60 matches a draw of 60, 48, 25, 17, 3.
Step 2: Pick your red Powerball
Choose one number from 1 to 26. It is drawn from a separate drum, so it can be the same as one of your white balls.
Step 3: Decide on Power Play
Power Play costs $1 more per play. It multiplies non-jackpot prizes by 2X, 3X, 4X, 5X or 10X, depending on the multiplier drawn. The 10X multiplier is only in play when the advertised jackpot is $150 million or less. Power Play does not change the jackpot.
Step 4: Choose the draws
Choose Monday, Wednesday, Saturday, or several draws in a row if your seller allows it.
Step 5: Keep your ticket
Keep the ticket (or your online receipt) safe. It is your proof of entry. Prizes are paid by the lottery that sold it.
You can also ask for random numbers instead of choosing them. A random line has exactly the same 1 in 292,201,338 chance as any other line.
Where the 1 in 292,201,338 comes from
The arithmetic has two parts:
- Ways to choose 5 white balls from 69: C(69,5) = 11,238,513
- Ways to choose 1 red ball from 26: 26
11,238,513 × 26 = 292,201,338. Each play covers exactly one of those combinations. Our guide on how odds are calculated applies the same method to other games.
The "Powerball only" prize at 1 in 38.32 can be checked the same way. The chance of matching none of the five white balls is C(64,5) / C(69,5) = 7,624,512 / 11,238,513 ≈ 0.678. Multiply by the 1-in-26 chance of the red ball and you get ≈ 0.0261, or 1 in 38.32. That is why the cheapest prize is also the most common one.
Powerball odds for every prize tier
The same method gives the odds of all 9 prize tiers on the official prize chart. Each row counts the white-ball combinations that produce that match and multiplies by the red-ball chance (1 in 26 to match it, 25 in 26 to miss it). LottaGo calculated these figures; the jackpot, the overall odds and the Powerball-only tier agree with the official chart.
| Match | White-ball combinations | Odds per play |
|---|---|---|
| 5 + Powerball | 1 | 1 in 292,201,338 |
| 5 | 1 | 1 in 11,688,054 |
| 4 + Powerball | 5 × 64 = 320 | 1 in 913,129 |
| 4 | 320 | 1 in 36,525 |
| 3 + Powerball | 10 × 2,016 = 20,160 | 1 in 14,494 |
| 3 | 20,160 | 1 in 580 |
| 2 + Powerball | 10 × 41,664 = 416,640 | 1 in 701 |
| 1 + Powerball | 5 × 635,376 = 3,176,880 | 1 in 92 |
| Powerball only | 7,624,512 | 1 in 38.32 |
Add up all nine and you get the official overall odds of 1 in 24.87. Note that 2 white balls without the Powerball is not a prize tier, and neither is 1 white ball on its own. So the answer to "what are the odds of matching 4 numbers" is 1 in 36,525 for 4 white balls alone, or 1 in 913,129 for 4 white balls plus the Powerball. Prize amounts other than the $4 Powerball-only prize are on the official prize chart; LottaGo doesn't repeat them here. For other games, see the odds of all lotteries.
Do more tickets improve your Powerball odds?
Only in proportion. Ten different plays cover 10 of the 292,201,338 combinations, so the jackpot chance becomes about 1 in 29.2 million for $20. Five plays give about 1 in 58.4 million. Buying the same numbers twice adds nothing to your chance; it only doubles the payout if that line wins.
The jackpot
The Powerball jackpot starts at $20 million (annuity), according to Wikipedia, and grows every time it is not won. The current advertised jackpot is $562,000,000, and the next draw is on Oct 14, 2026. For details on lump sum vs annuity payment, use the prize information of the lottery that sold your ticket. Those rules are set by the operator, not by LottaGo.
Example: checking a line with Power Play
Your line: 6, 18, 33, 47, 61 + Powerball 12, with Power Play. Draw: 6, 21, 33, 50, 64 + Powerball 12, Power Play 3X.
- White balls matched: 6 and 33 = 2
- Powerball matched: yes
- Result: 2 + Powerball. That beats the Powerball-only minimum, so the line wins a prize. Because you bought Power Play and 3X was drawn, the base prize for that tier is multiplied by three.
If you had matched only the Powerball, you would win the $4 base prize, or $12 with a 3X Power Play.
Do hot or overdue numbers help?
No. The red and white balls have no memory. LottaGo tests this openly: for every lottery, five statistical strategies behind the AI Agent (hot numbers, overdue numbers, all-time leaders, typical shape, frequent pairs) are run against up to the last 150 draws, using only earlier history each time, and compared with random picks:
| Strategy | Avg. matches (of 5) | PowerBall matched | 3+ matches |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hot numbers | 0.376 | 2.2% | 0% |
| Overdue numbers | 0.364 | 4.7% | 0.44% |
| All-time leaders | 0.373 | 2.9% | 0% |
| Typical shape | 0.351 | 3.8% | 0.44% |
| Frequent pairs | 0.384 | 4.2% | 0% |
| Random pick (theory) | 0.362 | 3.9% | 0.18% |
The strategies perform like random picks, which is what you would expect from a fair draw. The Powerball (PowerJack) statistics are still interesting to look at. Since Oct 7, 2015, the most drawn white balls are 21, 61, 64, 28, 23, and 27. Just treat that as history, not a forecast.
Common mistakes
- Confusing the US and Australian games. Australian Powerball draws 7 numbers from 1–35. A US-style line of 5 + 1 does not fit that ticket.
- Expecting Power Play to boost the jackpot. It only multiplies non-jackpot prizes.
- Counting on 10X. It is only available when the advertised jackpot is $150 million or less.
- Picking only 1–31. Birthday numbers do not change your odds, but they are popular, so a win may be shared with more players.
- Mixing up Powerball and Mega Millions. Mega Millions uses 5 of 1–70 + 1 of 1–24, costs $5 with a built-in multiplier, and draws on Tuesdays and Fridays. See Mega Millions results.
| Lottery | Format | Jackpot odds | Draw days | Line price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PowerJackUnited States | 5 of 69 + 1 of 26 | 1 : 292,201,338 | Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday | $2.00 |
| MEGA MillionsUnited States | 5 of 70 + 1 of 24 | 1 : 290,472,336 | Tuesday and Friday | $5.00 |
How to check Powerball results
- Find the draw date printed on your ticket.
- Check the latest Powerball (PowerJack) results. The last draw was Oct 10, 2026: 1, 4, 19, 33, 51, 15 (the last number is the Powerball).
- Count the white balls you matched, then check the red ball separately.
- Confirm any win and the exact prize with the official lottery or the retailer that sold your ticket. Official results are always the operator's.
FAQ
How many numbers do you need to win Powerball?
Just one: the red Powerball on its own wins $4, at odds of 1 in 38.32. The official prize chart lists 9 tiers in total, and the jackpot needs all 5 white balls plus the Powerball. Two white balls only win when the Powerball matches too.
Do Powerball numbers have to be in order?
No. The five white balls can match in any order, so a ticket with 4, 19, 33, 52, 67 wins the same as one printed 67, 52, 33, 19, 4. Only the red Powerball is checked separately: it has to match the red ball drawn from 1–26, not one of the white balls.
What are the odds of matching 4 numbers in Powerball?
Matching 4 of the 5 white balls without the Powerball happens about once in 36,525 plays. Matching 4 white balls and the Powerball is about 1 in 913,129. LottaGo calculated both from the 5-of-69 and 1-of-26 pools: there are 5 × 64 = 320 ways to match exactly 4 white balls out of 11,238,513.
How do Powerball tickets work?
Each $2 play is one line: 5 white numbers from 1–69 and one red Powerball from 1–26, for a chosen draw. You can pick the numbers or take random ones, add Power Play for $1, and play Monday, Wednesday or Saturday draws. The ticket or receipt is your proof of entry, and prizes are paid by the lottery that sold it.
When does Powerball play again?
Powerball draws every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday at 10:59 pm Eastern Time. The next draw is on Oct 14, 2026, and the advertised jackpot is $562,000,000. On LottaGo the countdown on the latest Powerball (US) results page shows the time left, and results appear there after each draw.
How much is a Powerball ticket?
$2 per play, plus $1 for Power Play (as of October 2026). Power Play multiplies non-jackpot prizes by 2X to 10X, but it doesn't change your odds of winning or the jackpot. The 10X multiplier is only in play when the advertised jackpot is $150 million or less.
Can I play US Powerball from outside the US?
It depends on where you live. LottaGo lists the game as PowerJack and shows its results everywhere, and its "Buy ticket" button leads to LottaGo's official partner, which buys the real ticket. The partner doesn't serve every country (its restriction list includes the US, the UK, Canada and Australia), and your local law decides whether buying a foreign lottery ticket is allowed. LottaGo earns a commission on any purchase.
Powerball is for adults only (18+, or older where your jurisdiction requires it), so play for fun, within a budget.
